Keeping Streets & Walkways Clear

Snow shovel, snowplow, and leaves

As we move from fall into winter in the Gorge, sidewalks and driveways can become hazardous even before the first snow falls. Wet, compacted leaves can be as slippery as ice, and when temperatures drop, that layer can quickly freeze underneath.

According to the National Safety Council, falls are the leading cause of nonfatal injuries in the U.S., accounting for more than 6.9 million emergency room visits each year, and slippery surfaces are one of the main culprits.

Why it Matters:

  • Piles of wet leaves conceal uneven pavement, curbs, or icy patches.
  • Leaves clog storm drains, causing standing water that later freezes.
  • Slips and trips are preventable with regular maintenance and awareness.

Property Owner Checklist:

  • Rake and remove leaves regularly from sidewalks, driveways, and steps.
  • Keep gutters and storm drains clear to prevent pooling and freeze-thaw damage.
  • Apply sand or ice-melt early when overnight temps drop near freezing.
  • Trim low-hanging vegetation before storms or snow accumulation.
  • Check that exterior lights are working - visibility helps prevent accidents.
