SW Washington Regional Transportation Council Seeks Public Feedback on Transportation Safety Improvements in Klickitat and Skamania Counties

RTC

The Southwest Washington Regional Transportation Council (RTC) is inviting residents, travelers, and community stakeholders to participate in a month-long engagement effort to help shape critical transportation safety improvements in Klickitat and Skamania counties. As part of developing the Gorge Safety Action Plan, RTC has released a set of recommended strategies intended to reduce fatal and serious-injury crashes and create safer roads for all users.

According to the Safety Action Plan materials (2019–2023), 9% of all reported crashes in the two-county region resulted in fatalities or serious injuries, with the primary contributing factors including speeding (32%), impairment (22%), and distraction (13%). Crash types most associated with severe outcomes include roadway departures or collisions with fixed objects (56%), motorcycle-involved crashes (31%), intersection crashes (9%), and pedestrian-involved collisions (2%).

The plan is guided by the Safe System Approach, emphasizing safer road users, safer vehicles, safer speeds, safer roads, land use, and post-crash care.

Public Participation Opportunities

RTC is encouraging community members to review proposed improvements and share their input in two ways:
