City of White Salmon Unveils Hometown Heroes Banner Program Honoring Local Veterans

WHITE SALMON, WA – The City of White Salmon is proud to announce the launch of its Hometown Heroes Banner Program, a new initiative honoring local veterans whose service and sacrifice have shaped the fabric of our community. Banners were installed this week in advance of the annual 4th of July Parade.

The twelve commemorative banners along the downtown corridor each feature the name and service details of a veteran who is part of the Veterans Walk of Honor at the White Salmon Cemetery. These banners are a visible tribute to the courage, commitment, and legacy of those who have served our nation.

Among the first twelve honorees is longtime White Salmon resident John Cheney, who passed away earlier this year. A U.S. Navy veteran and active community member, Mr. Cheney dedicated many years to public service and was a member of American Legion Post 87.

The city worked with the leadership of American Legion Post 87 to identify and compile information on the honored veterans, a partnership that is intended to continue.

“This project is a heartfelt way to recognize and celebrate those in our community who answered the call to serve,” said Mayor Marla Keethler. “We’re grateful to American Legion Post 87 for their partnership and proud to see these banners serve as a reminder of the values we hold dear. We look forward to recognizing more veterans in future years and allowing community members to also contribute to supporting the program.”

In addition to the banner project, the City is exploring ways to further honor all veterans who call White Salmon and the surrounding area home, ensuring their names and stories are preserved for future generations.
